It is a bit of a generational disconnect, MMA fighters from the 80's and 90's were a bit more built on street cred in the community than their fight record. So Rickson's most famous fights tend to be fights that didn't occur under regulation and in rings, it is his beach fight with Huge Duarte or the beatdown he handed to Yoji Anjo who stormed into his school and demanded a match right there and then. He was BJJ's enforcer, the guy who struck fear into the LL fighters and made them think twice about storming into a BJJ school because if they did Rickson would visit and bring an ass kicking with him. Most of Rickson's reputation came from the Vale Tudo rivalry between Luta Livre and BJJ that played out in rings, the streets, on beaches, and in academies in Brazil. Rickson's prime athletic years were in the 1980s and by the time the sport took off he was in his late 30's and not really looking to have a full career the way we imagine MMA fighters even in the late 90's perusing. Rickson's place in MMA history is interesting, he has a huge reputation, but it comes from an era before MMA was really "a sport".
